Tired of talking to yourself? Are you stuck at home, or feel shy about going out on your own to meet new people? The internet is a great place to shake off your shyness, meet new people from around the world, and form friendships with people who share your interests and passions. It’s not hard to learn how to make friends online.
I got in touch with Istanbul based Opentalk user who talked about old school ways of making friends.
“Yeah that was the latest fad during the late 90s(and early 2000s) when internet boom swept across the entire country. Young people thronged to nearby cyber cafes to open their new email accounts(Websites like Yahoo, Rediff, Hotmail and Sify ruled the roost then) and explore the landscape of the virtual world. Who could the forget the ubiquitous world of chatrooms where terms like ASL was the icebreaker. Yahoo messenger and Rediff chats were popular in that early era of the Internet age. Even such concept of friendship and later love spurned movies like You’ve Got Mail. I was one of the piquant consumers of the internet who would rush to the nearby dingy cyber cafe to get my daily bouts of entertainment. Curiosity was the factor here that propelled everyone to wade through the uncharted territory of an internet. Knowledge, porn, games, and what else!!! Everyone had everything on their platter at the click of their mouse.
Internet chat rooms were very popular among the youth population that time. For college goers, it was a new window of opportunity to get laid(Nowadays its Tinder). As I was a pre-pubescent kid back then so getting under the sheets was the last thing on my mind.Just the prospect of making unknown friends in a virtual world was the motivating factor.
Now coming to the question whether I believe in making online friends. Now you cannot generalize such notion. Some people have made lifelong online friends and some haven’t. People who did will always and those who couldn’t won’t believe. So it depends on the perception of the individual. I believe in making online friends albeit haven’t made any such.
And nowadays its easy to make online friends but difficult to retain them. The charm friendship in a virtual world cannot be compared with that in a real world. The idea of lifelong friendship in a virtual world is very rare.”
After exhausting all of our cookies we realized we both were talking online and had a good laugh!
